This week’s secret ingredient for Friday Foodie Fix is Sage! If ever there was a week to use sage it will be next week. I consider it the cornerstone herb for Thanksgiving dinner. Sage is often used in dishes containing pork, cheese, beans, poultry and stuffing. It’s a favorite for making sausage. If you are looking for more seasoning suggestions turn to the back of my favorite book, The Deluxe Food Lover’s Companion (Deluxe Edition). There they list foods and what seasonings that best go with them. It’s right after the section on British and American Food and Cooking Terms. That’s been very helpful for me as I work on my Christmas menu.
For now however, I’m still working on Thanksgiving and making my Pancetta Sage Sausage to use in my gluten and dairy free Stuffing.
Sage is a wonderfully easy herb to grow in a garden. It’s very hardy and you can really do nothing to and it looks like this. Yes, this is from my garden. I love the soft but rough texture of sage.
Before we get to the sharing part where you link up recipes that include Sage, I thought I would share some past Secret Ingredients that might be ones you’ll be using next week.
Asparagus, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cranberries, Cinnamon, Chocolate, Corn, Green Beans, Mushrooms, Pecans, Pork, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Spinach, Squash, Sweet Potato, and Whipped Cream.

Jenn- I'm glad you agree! Thank you for sharing your recipe.
I like sage, but don't normally use it by myself. I'm pretty sure my poultry seasoning contains sage. I'm a slacker and use that most of the time.
Love that you added those links from previous FFF events. I know I need to add some posts to those!
Happy Friday, HP girl! I see you didn't sleep in much. 😉
Shirley
Shirley- running on empty and time for a nap. I'm going to have to send you some sage. Toss whole leaves in oil and crisp them to serve with pork and you'll be hooked. Yes, poultry seasoning does have sage in it. It's usually listed first on the ingredients.
I love sage!! Posting one of my absolute favorite recipes using sage – Sweet Potatoes with Cranberries and Sage. Thanks for hosting!
Carol that sounds like a wonderful combination. Thank you for sharing.
This is an herb I really need to use more! I love the earthy flavor.
Alisa- I love the way it feels too. So soft. But the taste is truly amazing. It can add so much depth to so many dishes.
Hey Ms Sassy Pants, I meant to add this yesterday but my computer battery died while I was in the middle of it and I totally forgot what i was doing when I finally got back on.
I added my Thanksgiving stuffing with sausage, apples, and sage. And I am so with you on how fun it is to feel the leaves. I molest those poor leaves every time I cook with it! ;0)
I love sage, and definitely need to use it more! Thanks to everyone for some great recipes to try 🙂
Stephanie- thank you for stopping by. I can't wait to try out some of these recipes. What are you cooking?
