As I mentioned in my Friday Foodie Fix- Tomatillos post, this month I am hosting the wonderfully popular blog event Go Ahead Honey, It’s Gluten Free.
Naomi Devlin authors the blog Straight Into Bed, Cakefree and Dried and started this monthly event. Each month it’s hosted on a different blog with a different theme.
My theme for the event is Scared Silly!
First let me share what that theme means. These would be recipes using foods you were once scared to eat but then after you tried them realized it was silly to be scared of them. So recipes using that ingredient or that dish will be perfect. UPDATE: If you’ve never been afraid to try anything, you can write about someone else in your house.
As for me I was scared of beets. I’m not sure why. I still don’t crave beets but I do enjoy them in many forms.
Now how can you participate. It’s really easy and there are two ways. NOTE: you do not have to be a “designated” gluten-free blogger to participate, the recipe just needs to be gluten free.
First, if you don’t have a blog email me a photo and description of the dish or ingredient you were once scared to eat. Let me know why you were scared to eat that food if you can.
Second, if you do have a blog, simply publish your blog post with the recipe using that ingredient or dish that you were scared to eat. The deadline to send me an email with the photo and the link to the post is no later than midnight EST – Saturday, October 23rd. I will then compile them all and share them in a post at the end of the month. Please link back to this post in your post and don’t forget to mention Naomi and her blog!
I will post all of the entries on Thursday October 28th so make sure you come back to see what ingredients and dishes had us Scared Silly.
I hope you will join in and share your recipes. I think this is a very important topic to share along with being fun. We all might find some great new recipes for foods we are currently scared to eat. I also would like to know that I’m not alone in being scared to eat something as silly as beets.
Please share this with anyone and everyone. Use the Share and Enjoy! buttons at the bottom of this post. I would love to have so many submissions that I’m up late typing away.
Email your link and photo to diane at thewholegang dot org. You can use the quick email link-envelope- at the top right corner of the blog.
If you plan on participating let me know by leaving a comment, tell me on facebook or email me. Unless you’re too scared…..
I have never participated in this before, but I think I will this time. I was thinking as I was reading the description that my scared silly was beets. Then I read the next sentence, "As for me I was scared of beets." And, I laughed out loud. I think that beets is one for a lot of people.
Not sure what I'm going to choose, though. I have quite a few.
xoxo,
Tia 😛
Tia- So glad you're going to join in. Believe it or not I still have foods that scare me but it's no longer beets. I agree that beets are common. You could still write about beets because I'm not allowed to share my latest beet recipe. My son says he's going to sell it. A family of entrepreneurs. Can't wait to see what you share.
Of course, count me in!! Have NO CLUE what it will be about, but I will have a post to you by the 23rd!!
I love your theme, Diane!! Just perfect! 😉
xo
Kim
Kim- When we are lucky enough to move around or visit different places, you have an opportunity to try regional dishes. Have you found that in your travels? If so maybe there is something you could try that maybe you would not have tried.
I ate my scary dish yesterday and will recreate it at home for your theme. I think I can get the courage up to do it.
Wendy
Wendy- I can't wait to see what that dish was!
Shoot – I just recently posted a beet recipe that would have worked perfectly for this.
I think it's time to go buy some brussel sprouts….
Deanna- brussel sprouts used to be on my list too. Have fun with them. I can't wait to see how you cook them.
"Unless you're too scared."
Oh man, that's all I need to hear to jump into the fray. I'm throwing down the gauntlet (uhh, I mean oven mitt) and accepting your challenge.
Hmmm? I'm not really afraid of food — unless of course it's genetically modified, processed or pesticide laden and I'm sure that's not what you meant. In fact, I'm pretty bossy when it comes to food. I'll have to think about this one. =)
Off to the kitchen. But I'll be back.
Peace, love and scary food.
Melissa
P.S. How can anyone (especially a woman) be afraid of beets? They're gorgeous, fully of girlie gemstone colors and packed with sugar.
Melissa- I just can't imagine you being afraid of anything unless it's a favorite dish people eat that is processed and you make the real version they don't realize it actually came from. Can't wait to see what you share.
Sounds like a great theme! Not sure what my post will be about yet, but I'll get it out soon! 🙂
Hallie- Great to hear you're joining in.
Hi Diane,
First, I like the new layout of your site! It's very efficient and open.
Second, regarding this theme – ever since I saw it announced, I have no idea what I'm going to do. There isn't anything that I'm aware of that I'm afraid to eat.
Zoe- feel free to write about something someone in your house was scared to eat. It doesn't have to be you.
I like that theme, Diane. Squash was one of those foods for me. I'll definitely try to get a post written up for this.
Thanks Linda. Yeah, squash is still on my don't like yet list. I'm enjoying all the ideas people are sharing on your blog. I think I just may find one I like. Thanks for joining in.
Count me in! I'll have to talk to my mom to see if there was anything that I was afraid to eat. I know that there were a lot of foods that I refused to eat… I'll have to think about this one.
Moms always have great stories. I refused to eat almost everything as a kid and never combine things. I think I was 8 when I proclaimed I was eating two things at once, a PB & Jelly sandwich. So see there is hope for anyone. Can't wait to hear what you have to share. Thanks!
I'm in! Working on my post tonight, should have it up in the next couple of days. Thanks Diane.
Can't wait to see what you share. I love how people are so giving. Thanks!
I'm not sure why I thought the deadline was tomorrow for sending it to you. Mine is posted but I guess too late. I had better plan more accurately next time! LOL
