Ostrich Filet Steak with Hand Cut Oven Fries

I like a good steak and I really love a steak that not only tastes great but has a lot of bang for the buck.

Ostrich meat is a wonderful healthy red meat with all of the flavor and texture of beef.  It is rich in protein and high in iron yet is lower in fat, calories and cholesterol than skinless chicken or turkey.  The price is comparable to high quality beef and sometimes a little less expensive.  I order my ostrich from Blackwing Meats.   I like that the meats are vacuumed sealed and they stay fresh for a long time in the freezer.

We also love french fries at our house.  So far every one’s favorite are my Hand Cut Oven Fries.   The secret to making great potatoes is to place them into a bowl of cold water until you are ready to toss them with oil and put them into the oven.  This will prevent the potatoes from discoloring while waiting to get them all peeled and cut.  Make sure you dry the potatoes before you toss in them oil to bake.

I like this meal because it’s basic, not a lot of ingredients and everyone likes it.  The steak gets the basic rub down with olive oil, salt and pepper before going onto the grill pan.  The fries are tossed in olive oil with salt, pepper, onion powder, paprika and parsley.   The only thing that takes a little thought is what to serve with it.  Tonight I chose peas which was not popular. But then again there are not many green vegetables they love around here.

    Wow…that ostrich steak is making me drool. I've had ostrich in burgers before, but not a nice steak such as that. Might just have to seek it out. Yum.

      Alta- Ostrich has such great flavor. It taste like beef but so much better for you. I order mine from Black Wing meats and keep them in my freezer. They keep for a long time. Great to have on hand.

    Hmmm? I think I've commented on your ostrich before, and I'm still interested, but no closer to trying it. It looks good, sounds wonderful and I'm sure adds some healthy nutrition to the meal. But I love the hand cut oven fries. I like the sweet potato variety as well.

      Melissa- I'd love to hear your secrets for sweet potato fries. I can't seem to get anyone in this house to eat them. I might have to try to deep fry them.

    I think that's a gorgeous meal. I wouldn't mind trying ostrich steak, but maybe on somebody else's nickel. 😉 I tried an ostrich burger several years ago and I wasn't impressed. Still, this looks great.

    I love the fries and the peas! We are big peas fans here. There's more to the water trick for the fries than just preventing discoloration, right? I've made them this way before and they were unbelievably good. I read what the water did and now I can't remember … but I know they were the best fries we've ever had. I plan to make them again soon.

      Shirley- I've been hunting and hunting for the description that explains what putting the potatoes in the water does but I can't find it. You are right that this makes the best fries I've ever had too. If you find the explanation please share.
