Food Rock Stars- Kim Maes

Welcome to March, National Nutrition Month.   I’m challenging you for the entire month think about what you are eating and what’s inside.  Are you up for the challenge?

Food Rock Stars- Kim Maes I know someone who lives their life like that and her name is Kim Maes.  If I had a sister it would be Kim.  Even my Mac thinks so because when the face recognition software looks through my photos it has confused me with her and her with me.  Sorry for Kim on that one.

I met Kim in person in Seattle at the IFBC- International Food Blogging Conference.  We sat next to each other, shared, learned, giggled and just had a great time.  I’ve been a fan of her blog and her really cool iPhone and iPad app, Cook It Allergy Free all of the same name.

So today I’m sharing with you the answers Kim gave to many questions.  I hope you enjoy Kim as much as I do.

Kim Maes

Business and or blog name: Cook It Allergy Free

URL:  https://cookitallergyfree.com/blog

Location:  Scottsdale, AZ

Favorite quote:  I have a Vision Board FULL of favorite quotes, and my actual favorite changes often, based on where I am in my life.  For now, it would be:

If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves. -Thomas Edison

Oh, and I also like:

“The best way to live is to not know what is going to happen to you at the end of the day.”

Ooh, one more:

“I will relax and read a book when sense is telling me to do the laundry.”

Food Rock Stars- Kim Maes Focus of blog or business:  I created the Cook IT Allergy Free iPhone and iPad Apps to customize recipes to work with common food allergies.  My blog focuses on the same.  My goal is to take the confusion out of cooking with dietary restrictions and help people understand that there are so many healthier natural alternatives available to us.  I also like to highlight that very little, if anything at all, needs to come from a box.

Social Media I play in:   Twitter and Facebook are the main ones

I started my blog in the month and year:  March 2010

Training/education I received:   Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Biology with a Minor in Exercise Physiology.

A Master’s Degree in Holistic Nutrition

My favorite healthy food:  Home-made smoothies packed with fruits, vegetables, and greens.

My favorite snack food:  My Home-made granola bars and also Kale chips

My top 3 healthiest foods I love to eat or recommend:  Chia Seeds, Kale, Avocados

Childhood ambition:  To be a doctor – a Cardiologist, to be exact

Favorite activity:  Hiking with my family on the weekends. My 3 year old can even make it to the top of the mountain now.

Favorite thing to cook:  Thanksgiving Dinner (I host every year and love it)

Favorite kitchen tool:  Kitchen Aid Mixer, VitaMix, and my Japanese Knives

Biggest risk I’ve taken:  Investing the money and time to develop this App.

Favorite exercise:  Yoga, without a doubt

What I you do to treat myself:  Yoga; and curling up with a good book by the fire without worrying about what else needs to get done.

What I do to feel at peace:  When I am doing Yoga or when I am Hiking with my family

Favorite vacation spot:  Our little beach cottage just North of San Diego would be my first choice.  Barbados would be my second (this would actually be my first choice if I could afford to fly there any time I want,  but since that is not the case, I had to bump it to #2).

I started my blog to: Take the confusion out of cooking with allergies.Using substitutions in recipes can be daunting, and often can yield results that are less than appetizing. Nothing is more helpful in this world of ingredient substitutions than utilizing the advice and experience of the other allergy free “chefs” out there. Allergy free cooking really is a collaborative effort. I want to help bring the “allergy free community” together so that we can use each other for ideas, feedback, and support. This is my passion because of my family’s own experiences with food allergies and Celiac Disease, and I know the very challenges that this community is faced with when trying to create wonderful meals for our families.

Products and/or services I offer:  The Cook IT Allergy Free iPhone App and the Cook IT Allergy Free iPad App

What I love about what I do:  I have found friendships that I never even dreamed of when I started this – true, genuine, supportive, authentic friendships. I have become part of a community of the most amazing advocates and I am grateful every day for where my passion has led me.

In the future I see myself:  Working with children who have different auto-immune diseases or cancers, guiding and counseling them and their families on how nutrition can help them through their treatments and healing process.
