Traveling and Eating Gluten Free & Dairy Free through Laguna Beach

This week has been a wonderful vacation to Laguna Beach, California.  We’ve eaten our way through local restaurants and gathered supplies to cook from the local Whole Foods Market. We choose to stay at The Carriage House Bed and Breakfast with a kitchenette in order to cook a few meals to insure gluten free and dairy free foods.  This is a wonderful place just a couple of blocks up the street from the beach.  The owners Lesley and Andy Kettly are delightful and wonderful hosts.

During our visit we have eaten out at many restaurants with much luck.  So far our favorite has been K’ya Bistro at La Casa del Camino.  They offer small plates of delicious food at amazing prices.  For those like me eating gluten and dairy free they successfully made just a few adjustments to their dishes.  I had the following over two meals and it was all delicious:  Grilled Filet Mignon with polenta and spinach and Roasted Potatoes cooked in olive oil with a steak seasoning mix, Cajun Shrimp and Herb Roasted Chicken with grilled vegetables.  Others with me had Lobster Truffle Risotto, Grilled Flat Iron Steak and Fries, Cheese and Fruit Plate, and Tuna with capers, red onion and quail egg.  If you have the opportunity to go you must ask for Joe Velazquez as your server.  The best service and most helpful person we have met at a restaurant.  They are definitely not paying him enough.

Other great meals were had at the Sapphire Laguna Restaurant, Sun Dried Tomato and tonight we are headed to Las Brisas for another amazing meal.  I know because it too will be amazing as I’ve eaten there before, however it was many years ago.  I am greatly looking forward to this experience overlooking the Laguna Beach and Pacific Ocean at sunset.
I also cooked a few seafood meals in our unit.  Keeping it simple we had Pacific Cod with a raw fruit salsa and a Citrus Shrimp dish with cooked

red peppers, green onions, mango and avocado with a sauce of lemon, lime and orange with cilantro.

Laguna Beach is a beautiful place to visit and a wonderful artist community.  Now all I need to do is figure out how to move here because I know I’ll be able to get wonderful fresh foods that are gluten and dairy free on a regular basis.

Thank you Laguna Beach!
